As of 10:00 am on March 12, 1999, with snow still falling, here are the conditions of the bikepaths of Boston, Brookline, and Cambridge. Please send updates and reports on the conditions of other paths in Massachusetts to Doug Mink dmink@cfa.harvard.edu.
Arnold Arboretum 1.5 miles of park roads which are mostly closed to automobile traffic with no intersections Boston Parks and Harvard University | Two plows were working on the roads as I rode through. From the Walter St. entrance along Bussey Brook, there is still ice under the snow which the plows didn't get. It was ridable for this ice biker, however. |
Jamaicaway Bikepath 1.5 miles of mostly bike/ped-separated path paralleling a busy 4-lane parkway; two intersections with traffic lights Boston Parks Deparment | It wasn't plowed from the rotary to Perkins St. when I was there, and snow was already drifting into the bikepath, so I rode on the pedestrian path which was swept clear by the wind. The path WAS freshly plowed from Perkins St. all the way to Route 9. Near Daisy Field, where it was drifted shut by last week's storm, the path was clearer than it has been for a week. There is still a snow cover, though. I expect that the whole path will have been plowed at least once by the evening commute. |
Muddy River Path 12-foot-wide 0.6 mile shared bike/ped path with no intersections Brookline Park Department and DPW | While plowed to pavement as usual, there was some slush which could freeze if it goes below freezing. It was sanded, so there is good traction and it is sheltered, so there is very little drifting. |
B.U. Bridge | Pavement clear or snow-covered with less ice than earlier in the week. |
Charles River Bikepath Narrow, shared bike-ped path with few intersections Metropolitan District Commission | The Cambridge side was snow-covered but rideable from B.U. Bridge to Hawthorne St. Drifting snow made it almost unpassable in some places. Hopefully, the MDC will plow it later today. |
