It started snowing Sunday, but that snow turned to slush fairly quickly.
The paths were plowed by my Monday morning commute, mbut still slushy.
By evening, they were all pretty clear with new snow starting to fall.
On Tuesday morning, there were four or so inches of snow on the ground and
it was still coming down fairly steadily. Some paths were icy for the next
several days, but by Friday, I was back on my road bike and didn't see much
ice on any of the paths I rode.

Forest Hills Station
Cycle tracks along South and Washington Streets and the Arborway
MBTA and DCR
|
This year, the bicycle paths were plowed as well as the sidewals.
The two-way cycle track along the Arborway west from South St. was totally
clear. The southbound cycle track along Washington St. was well-plowed,
but the ramp to the Washington St. bike lane was blocked by a pile of snow
at least until Wednesday night, but the bike lanes on Washingto St. and
Ukraine were clear. By Wednesday morning, the sidewalk on the southbound
side of Washington St. was clear, too.

Arnold Arboretum
1.5 miles of park roads which are mostly closed to automobile traffic
with no intersections
Boston Parks and Harvard University
|
On Tuesday, the road between the two Arborway entrances was plowed to packed
snow which was pretty icy because they don't use sand or salt. I had no
slipping on my studded tires, but I would have been pretty wary without them.
By Thursday, the road was down to pavement.

I got off the Orange Line at Green St. on Monday night to bike to Forest Hills
on Monday night and found the path bikable with stretches of black ice.
On Friday night, I biked home from a play pretty late, and the path was clear]
from Mass. Ave to Forest Hills. The Columbus Ave. parking-buffered bike lanes,
which I took because there were as many people walking on the bikepath as on
the sidewalk, were clear from Mass. Ave. to Ruggles Station, except for the
double-parked cars on the Mass. Ave. end.

Not always clear enough for two bikes to pass; snow next to curb and large

length, by large piles of snow.

Katie Theodoros reports: Cambridge street from Harvard to Lechmere (partially
separated, partially on road) is still very slushy and icy. It seems it was
plowed at the beginning of the storm and then not again. All the runoff from
the road had re-frozen in the lane - studded tires needed.

These paths aren't plowed because they get relatively little transportation
use and because they are used by cross-country skiers like me. There
are marked narrow bike lanes on Enneking Parkway through the
reservation which are probably clear. After this snowfall, the paths
should be pretty bikable, though there will be ice.
