MassPaths Bikepath Snow Plowing Report
Monday, December 4, 2019

Bike paths and lanes are integral parts of the bicycle transportation network, and these reports are provided to encourage their use by bicyclists who might otherwise not venture out in the snow, and to encourage their proper maintenance (which includes snow plowing) by the responsible agencies given in bold type below. If they are not plowed while the snow is still soft, paths with significant foot traffic become unskiable within a day, and remain a mess for everyone until the ice melts.

It started snowing Sunday, but that snow turned to slush fairly quickly. The paths were plowed by my Monday morning commute, mbut still slushy. By evening, they were all pretty clear with new snow starting to fall.

On Tuesday morning, there were four or so inches of snow on the ground and it was still coming down fairly steadily. Some paths were icy for the next several days, but by Friday, I was back on my road bike and didn't see much ice on any of the paths I rode.

Please send updates and reports on the conditions of other paths in Massachusetts to Jessica Mink.

Y Forest Hills Station
Cycle tracks along South and Washington Streets and the Arborway
MBTA and DCR
This year, the bicycle paths were plowed as well as the sidewals. The two-way cycle track along the Arborway west from South St. was totally clear. The southbound cycle track along Washington St. was well-plowed, but the ramp to the Washington St. bike lane was blocked by a pile of snow at least until Wednesday night, but the bike lanes on Washingto St. and Ukraine were clear. By Wednesday morning, the sidewalk on the southbound side of Washington St. was clear, too.
Y Arnold Arboretum
1.5 miles of park roads which are mostly closed to automobile traffic with no intersections
Boston Parks and Harvard University
On Tuesday, the road between the two Arborway entrances was plowed to packed snow which was pretty icy because they don't use sand or salt. I had no slipping on my studded tires, but I would have been pretty wary without them. By Thursday, the road was down to pavement.
Blackwell Footpath
A half-mile gravel path connecting the Forest Hills MBTA station and the South St. Arboretum entrance
Boston Parks and Harvard University
It didn't look plowed when I biked by on Washington St. and can be pretty icy.
Roslindale Bike Lanes
Two miles of bike lanes on both sides of Washington St. from Forest Hills to Roslindale Square and to West Roxbury on Belgrade Ave. and buffered and wide bike lanes along American Legion Highway
Boston Public Works Department
They were pretty clear by Tuesday night, but some of the ramps to them from the sidewalk were not. By Thursday, Walk Hill and Washington St. paths were clear.
Centre St. and VFW Parkway Bike Lanes
DCR, plowed by MassDOT
Not checked but probably partly clear.
Arborway Bike Lanes
Bike lanes from Murray Circle to Forest Hills

Clear and salted from Tuesday morning on, but I skipped it Tuesday morning to check out the Arboretum roads.

Centre/South Bike Lanes
A mile of bike lanes through the heart of Jamaica Plain from Jackson Square and the Southwest Corridor to Forest Hills

Jamaicaway Bikepath
1.5 miles of mostly bike/ped-separated paths paralleling a busy 4-lane parkway; two intersections with traffic lights
Boston Parks Deparment
Plowed before end of snow, so there was never more than an inch or two of snow. By Tuesday night, the paths were totally clear.
Prince St.
A future contraflow lane around high-speed Parkman Drive which feeds into the Perkin St. bike lanes
Boston DPW
The street is probably clear, but I avoid it when the temperature is below freezing because I have a hard time on the patch of slick ice which often stretches all of the way across the road at the intersection with Perkins St.
Perkins St. Bike Lanes
1.5 miles of mostly bike/ped-separated paths paralleling a busy 4-lane parkway; two intersections with traffic lights
Department of Conservation and Recreation
The lanes were pretty clear this time, but I used the sidewalk between Chestnut St. and the Jamaicaway both Tuesday and Wednesday nights because it was totally clears and I hit the Chestnut St. light wrong both nights. By Thursday night, the lanes were almost totally clear.
Olmsted Park Paths
3/4-mile of mostly bike/ped-separated paths built over Riverdale Road, across Leverett Pond from the Jamaicaway.
Brookline Park Department
Tuesday night the bikepath was pretty icy, but Wednesday night it was mostly clear.

It was a bit icy on Tuesday morning but clear by Wednesday morning, except that the paths down to the Aspinwall intersection remained totally unplowed.

Two one-block contra-flow lanes plus and contraflow cycle track
Brookline Park Department and DPW
Bike lane clear but cycle track totally unplowed.

12-foot-wide 0.6 mile shared bike/ped path with no intersections

I got off the Orange Line at Green St. on Monday night to bike to Forest Hills on Monday night and found the path bikable with stretches of black ice. On Friday night, I biked home from a play pretty late, and the path was clear] from Mass. Ave to Forest Hills. The Columbus Ave. parking-buffered bike lanes, which I took because there were as many people walking on the bikepath as on the sidewalk, were clear from Mass. Ave. to Ruggles Station, except for the double-parked cars on the Mass. Ave. end.

Brattle St. "Cycle Track"
Parking-buffered bike lanes between Brattle Square and Mason St.

Not always clear enough for two bikes to pass; snow next to curb and large piles of snow at intersections blocking one or both lanes. Contraflow feeder bike lane on James St. was blocked at both ends, and thus for much of its short length, by large piles of snow.
Mass. Ave. Cycle Track
Parking-buffered bike lanes outbound before and after Harvard Square
City of Cambridge
Clear on one-way stretch inbound from Central Square, but not checked outbound to the north.
Cambridge St. Cycle Track
Parking-buffered bike lanes outbound east of Cambridge Rindge and Latin
City of Cambridge
Katie Theodoros reports: Cambridge street from Harvard to Lechmere (partially separated, partially on road) is still very slushy and icy. It seems it was plowed at the beginning of the storm and then not again. All the runoff from the road had re-frozen in the lane - studded tires needed.

These paths aren't plowed because they get relatively little transportation use and because they are used by cross-country skiers like me. There are marked narrow bike lanes on Enneking Parkway through the reservation which are probably clear. After this snowfall, the paths should be pretty bikable, though there will be ice.
