MassPaths Bikepath Snow Plowing Report
Thursday, January 18, 2018

Bike paths and lanes are integral parts of the bicycle transportation network, and these reports are provided to encourage their use by bicyclists who might otherwise not venture out in the snow, and to encourage their proper maintenance (which includes snow plowing) by the responsible agencies given in bold type below. If they are not plowed while the snow is still soft, paths with significant foot traffic become unskiable within a day, and remain a mess for everyone until the ice melts.

It only snowed a couple of inches on Wednesday morning, January 17, and even less north of the Charles, but it fell wet and was followed by a dusting at night, and then everything remaining froze. Areas that didn't entirely melt during the weekend's rain were camoflaged by the fresh snow, snow froze, too, making simple-looking surfaces potentially dangerous. Thursday's clear skies should let enough sunlight through to melt most of the thin layer of snow on paths, but not in shady areas because the National Weather Service says the temperature will mostly stay around freezing until Saturday and Sunday, when rain is likely to melt everything.

Please send updates and reports on the conditions of other paths in Massachusetts to Jessica Mink.

Arnold Arboretum
1.5 miles of park roads which are mostly closed to automobile traffic with no intersections
Boston Parks and Harvard University
Lower road from Forest Hills to Visitor Center was plowed on Wednesday, but might have a thin layer of ice in shaded places, and I would assume those conditions prevale on all of the Arboretum's paved roads.
Blackwell Footpath
A half-mile gravel path connecting the Forest Hills MBTA station and the South St. Arboretum entrance
Boston Parks and Harvard University
It didn't look plowed when I biked by on Washington St. and can be pretty icy.
Roslindale Bike Lanes
Two miles of bike lanes on both sides of Washington St. from Forest Hills to Roslindale Square and to West Roxbury on Belgrade Ave. and buffered and wide bike lanes along American Legion Highway
Boston Public Works Department
The streets are pretty clear to the curb, so other than watching for ice under the light snow, the lanes on Washington St., Belgrade Ave., and Cummins Highway should be clear.
Centre St. and VFW Parkway Bike Lanes
DCR, plowed by MassDOT
Not checked but probably partly clear.
Arborway Bike Lanes
Bike lanes through Forest Hills
Department of Conservation and Recreation
The two-way cycle track which is complete along the Arborway west from South St. is once again unplowed, and there is ice under the snow, so used the sidewalk.
Arborway sidewalks
1 mile of wide paved shoulder which is unmarked but usually clear of parked cars during rush hour
Department of Conservation and Recreation and Boston Parks
Mostly clear after the first snow, with a dusting and some ice by late evening.
Morton St. Buffered Bike Lanes

Franklin Park Roads

Not checked yet.
Centre/South Bike Lanes
A mile of bike lanes through the heart of Jamaica Plain from Jackson Square and the Southwest Corridor to Forest Hills
Boston Public Works Department
Clear because cars can now park to the curb. Parking lanes are narrow, though, so delivery trucks and large SUV's stick into the bike lane sometimes.
Jamaicaway Bikepath
1.5 miles of mostly bike/ped-separated paths paralleling a busy 4-lane parkway; two intersections with traffic lights
Boston Parks Deparment
Plowed by midday Wednesday, but not always to bare pavement. Later snow covered it all, but only lightly. Thawed snow froze in shade, so there is occasionally ice, but it can usually be avoided.
Prince St.
A future contraflow lane around high-speed Parkman Drive which feeds into the Perkin St. bike lanes
Boston DPW
Clear.
Perkins St. Bike Lanes
1.5 miles of mostly bike/ped-separated paths paralleling a busy 4-lane parkway; two intersections with traffic lights
Department of Conservation and Recreation
Old snow melted off, and road salt melted Wednesdays fresh snow, so these were almost totally clear on Wednesday night.
Olmsted Park Paths
3/4-mile of mostly bike/ped-separated paths built over Riverdale Road, across Leverett Pond from the Jamaicaway.
Brookline Park Department
Mostly clear on Wednesday midday. With a dusting on top that night after the freeze, watch for ice.
Brookline Ave. Path
Mixed-use path from Riverway ramp to Riverway intersection
Brookline Park Department
Clear around Route 9, but a bit icy as you head north.

Two one-block contra-flow lanes plus and contraflow cycle track

The bike lanes were clear, but the cycle track had one little bit of old ice.

Pretty clear, but some ice under the snow.

City of Cambridge
Clear Wednesday night, but a Cambridge cyclist reported on Thursday: Black ice on the bike lane Brattle this morning around 8:45. Fell and broke my clavicle. In the Cambridge Hospital ED. I don't think I was even braking, not going fast. Of course, they came to treat the path, as the ambulance arrived, presumably because they learned about the 911 call. It didn't even seem like the roads had been treated. Was DPW just hoping the ice would eventually melt?

These paths aren't plowed because they get relatively little transportation use and because they are used by cross-country skiers like me.
