This is the storm that shut down the city, starting on Sunday and
continuing through Monday, we got somewhere around 30 inches in the
southern part of Boston. The city was closed down on both Monday and
Tuesday, and the MBTA had *major* problems and was no longer
anyone's first or last resort. Bicycles were the best way to get around
the city, but as the salt melted street snow, lots of new potholes started
to appear, so the roads and icy, bumpy paths are starting to do a job on my
bikes.

Charles River Bikepaths
Narrow, shared bike-ped path with few intersections
Department of Conservation and Recreation
|
I tried riding upstream from the BU Bridge, but bailed to streets as
soon as I could due to a very bumpy surface with lots of loose snowl.
Aaron Pik reported on Wednesday morning:
I tried riding along the Cambridge side of the Charles River path
from Hawthorne to JFK. While I was technically able to "ride," I quickly
bailed on the path at JFK and took the roads through Cambridge instead.

Plowed almost to pavement; bikable.
|
Southwest Corridor Bikepath
Separated Bike/Ped path with poorly-designed intersections
Department of Conservation and Recreation
|
Plowed to packed powder by Thursday.
Jamie Merrill reported on Wednesday:
From Stony Brook to Ruggles, it's mostly packed snow with some small
patches almost to pavement. Occasional surprise snow piles. Most
intersections have partially plowed-in entrances but still passable.
Overall, one of the post-blizzard trips of the year. Columbus Bike Lane
has all but disappeared from Ruggles to Dartmouth but the roads are
clear.

South Bay Harbor Trail

|
Somerville Community Path
Wide rail trail from Davis Square to Cedar St.
City of Somerville
|
Nick Goffee reports:
Buena Vista Rd to Cameron Ave: Pretty well plowed, but a bit narrow and
its plowedness tapers at the edges, which can make it hard to pass
pedestrians.
|
Red Line Linear Park Path
Alewife MBTA station to Davis Square over Red Line
City of Cambridge
City of Somerville
|
Not checked yet, but probably plowed
|
Danehy Park Paths
City of Cambridge
|
Only the bike path was plowed because the pedestrian path is too narrow
to plow with a truck. It was packed powder, as was the narrow path to
St. Peter's Field and Garden St. I had no problem biking
|
Cambridge Bike Lanes
Striped lanes of varying widths on major and connecting streets
City of Cambridge
|
Sometimes they're slightly usable, like on Brookline St. from the BU
Bridge to Central Square, but mostly they're under snow. Some of Mass.
Ave. is clear because of selective parking bans.
|
Vassar St. Cycle Track
Buffered bike lanes from Main St. to Memorial Drive (almost)
City of Cambridge
|
Not checked.
|
Green St./Franklin St. Bicycle Boulevard
Narrow one-way streets parallel to Mass. Ave. from Central Square to<
Harvard Square/I>
City of Cambridge
|
I've been using Green St. instead of the river paths, and it's been
amazingly clear considering that there is nowhere to put the snow. It
has been lots worse in past winters.
|
Fresh Pond Bike Path
Parallel to Fresh Pond Parkway in Kingsley Park
City of Cambridge

|
Alewife Brook Trail

|
Boardwalk sections aren't plowed.

|
Concord Ave. Cycle Track
Buffered bike lanes from Belmont to Fresh Pond Parkway
City of Cambridge
|
Nick Goffee reports:
Concord Ave eastbound path: beautiful. Light dusting of powder.
Concord Ave westbound path: Last week, the sidewalk was plowed, but the
"raised bike lane" was blocked by a pile of snow at every intersection.
This morning, it looked like there'd been some effort to clear those. It
was still too sloppy to ride comfortably that close to car traffic,
though; I'd rather ride in traffic than suddenly fall into it.
|
Alewife Parkway Bridge Sidewalk
Connection from Minuteman Bikepath to Fresh Pond and beyond
Department of Conservation and Recreation
|
Narrow, but I rode it on Thursday and shared with pedestrians
|
Minuteman "Commuter Bikeway"
Towns of Cambridge, Arlington, Lexington, and Bedford
|
On Thursday, the path between Lake St. and Alewife was the best-plowed
path I rode after this storm.
Bruce Kulik reported on Thursday:
Bow Street to Bedford Depot.
Lexington: Reasonably well cleared down to hard packed snow with firm
ice underneath. Traction was good (700c x 37 touring tread, no studs).
I didn't encounter any surprise slippery areas. Was able to maintain
11-13MPH, 15MPH on the downhill from Bedford Street to 128. Quite
passable with appropriate caution.
Bedford: (Wiggins to Bedford Depot). Trail was only cleared to about a
5' width. Very rough hardpack surface. Uncomfortable to ride on at
8-10MPH. I don't recommend it. I'll use Great Road and Wiggins this
evening on the way home.
|
Northern Strand Trail
Everett, Malden
paved bikepaths
Cities of Malden and Everett
|
Steve Leibman reports:
Northern Strand Trail in Everett plowed and salted, but not for the full
length, leaving a quarter mile slog through deep snow at the
Malden/Everett border.
Bike path in Malden plowed, but not down to pavement, and a bit lumpy.
Overall, more exciting than usual.

Stony Brook Reservation
Hyde Park
4+ miles of paved bikepaths
Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation
|
These paths aren't plowed because they get relatively little transportation
use and because they are used by cross-country skiers like me. There
are marked narrow bike lanes on Enneking Parkway through the
reservation which are probably clear. Though after this snowfall, the paths
should be pretty bikable, and there usually isn't any ice.

City of Northampton
|
Craig Della Penna, who lives next to the path, has reported that
it is the intention of the DPW to make it passable ASAP after a storm.
If the storm is significant, then they plow it repeatedly --sometimes
10-12 times during the course of the storm to ensure its usability.
