Green Mobility Day at the Roslindale Farmers Market
To celebrate widespread efforts by the City of Boston to improve walking, cycling and mass
transit-and in particular the proposed dedicated bus lane on Washington St between Forest
Hills and Roslindale Village-RozzieBikes with the Roslindale Village Main Streets Farmers
Market are inviting Mayor Walsh, City Council President Michelle Wu, and City Councilor Tim
McCarthy to the opening day of the Roslindale Farmers' Market.
Starting at 10:30am, a special ceremony championing green mobility will be held with Mayor Walsh, and a noon-time bike ride will feature hidden gems in Roslindale. Join hundreds of your neighbors and friends to show your support for safe walking and bicycling and public transportation. The block of Poplar St. adjoining Adams Park will be closed to motor traffic to expand the market and accommodate local bike shops and groups.

Roslindale Neighborhood Bike Ride
Join Rozzie Bikes on a ride through the Roslindale neighborhood of Boston, with a bit of
Mattapan and Hyde Park, too, on our part of this year's Neighborhood Ride Series. We'll bike
through quiet neighborhoods and on busier streets which mostly have bike lanes. Travelling
mostly in the Stony Brook Valley, we'll visit a few natural areas on the way: Boston Nature
Center, Crane Ledge, and Sherrin Woods. The ride is under 7 miles long and fairly flat.
Heavy rain postpones the ride. Helmets are required.

Starting in West Roxbury, this stream goes through the Hyde Park,
Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, Mission Hill, Roxbury, and Fenway neighborhoods
of Boston from the city's highest point, Bellevue Hill, to the Charles
River. But it's almost all underground. We'll see how close we can come
to its route, and return following the Muddy River and Bussey Brook.

peel off at Forest Hills instead of riding all of the way back to the

Rabb Lecture Hall in the Boston Public Library, Copley Square,

are from 6:15-8:00 pm by Nicole Freedman, Director of Boston Bike
Program, who will report on past achievements, challenges, and
future goals of the Mayor's effort to create a "world class bicycling city."

youth programs, festivals and more. Special guest Mayor Menino will

bike up the Southwest Corridor and through downtown Boston
to the Charles River Dam, crossing the footbridge over the
locks to the flagpoles in Paul Revere Park, where, at 2:00,
we'll join an hour-long DCR tour of "the facility that keeps
the tides from reclaiming much of the Boston and Cambridge
Riverfront." We'll return along the Charles River and the Emerald
Necklace. Jessica is leading.

Gather at Adams Park at 2:30 for a bicycle tour of historic Roslindale
Village and nearby green sites with RozzieBikes. Bike through Bostons
best small village and around its perimeter. This is not a flat ride.
Surrounding green spaces have remained unbuilt partly because they're
on rocky hills. On this 15-mile route, we will visit the Emerald Bracelet
which surrounds our neighborhood: Arnold Arboretum, Forest Hills Cemetery,
Boston Nature Center, the Sherrin St. Urban Wild, Stony Brook Reservation,
Bellevue Hill, and the Roslindale Wetlands.

Saturday, June 18, 2011: Connect the Necklace: Bike Advocacy Tour
Meet at Roslindale Farmers Market at 10:30 a.m. (approx 5 hours)
At several key points along Frederick Law Olmsteds Emerald Necklace
park system, neighborhood, park, and bicycle advocates are devising ways
to repair the gaps that were created during the heyday of the automobile
and the highway. Proposals and public processes in Forest Hills, Brookline,
and Charlesgate could, if all goes well, make it safe and enjoyable to
circumnavigate the city by park once again. Riders will meet many of these
advocates and planners along the way and get a chance to visualize both
the future and the past. This ride begins in Roslindale and ends in
Beacon Hill (There will be the opportunity to attend afternoon events in
Beacon Hill/West End). Meet at the Boston Cyclists Union tent at the
Farmers Market (Adams Park in Roslindale Square) at 10:30 am. Light
refreshments will be served. The ride will leave at 11am.

results of research done in the area by Tufts graduate students this

Saturday, May 21, 2011: Cambridge Musical Mystery Bicycle Tour
Meet at Adams Park at 9:00 am to bike to the 10:00 am start on
Cambridge Common. The theme of this ride is music, particularly music's
role in Cambridge history. In addition to mapping dozens of sites
associated with musicians and performances, several points on our ride
will feature live music. You can expect everything from classical music
to progressive jazz. The musical highlight will be a free concert during
our mid-ride rest stop. WMBR station manager and DJ, Joe Graham (JoeG)
has arranged a performance by Air Traffic Controller, the 2010 Winner of
the Boston Music Conference. This is a ride not to be missed! The tour
is organized by the Cambridge Bicycle Committee in collaboration with
the Cambridge Community Development Department, the Cambridge Arts
Council, and the Cambridge Public Health Department.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) has
initiated a study of alternatives to replace the existing Monsignor
William J. Casey Overpass. The planning study phase consists of an
extensive public outreach process, and will be inclusive of atgrade and
structural solutions. The selected alternative will be advanced into
design phase for construction within the schedule of the PatrickMurray
Accelerated Bridge Program.
As part of the study, MassDOT has formed a Casey Overpass Working Advisory Group. The Working Advisory Group will study and evaluate safe, accessible, multimodal landscape, streetscape and transportation options that will lead to a project that can be completed by June 2016 under the Accelerated Bridge Program. The purpose of this meeting is to present the study goals and outline the work completed to date by the Working Advisory Group. Following the presentation, MassDOT staff will lead a discussion to gather public comments.

Since 2008, Fair Trade Boston has worked to expand the map of Fair
Trade goods and awareness in Boston and Cambridge. World Fair Trade Day
is coming up, and the Boston Cyclists Union is leading a ride to
celebrate - and we want you to join us! We will cover 15 miles and 5
official stops at some of Cambridge and Boston's best spots to enjoy
Fair Trade food and goods. The event is free, but you should
register in advance.
Registration, helmets, a replacement inner tube, and a good bike lock
are required.

headwaters of Stony Brook after the Market closes. We'll follow

Hyde Park, then we'll stay as close to its actual route as we can
all of the way to the Charles River. We'll return along the
Emerald Necklace, using a largely off-road route back to the
starting point.

The ride formally starts at Paul Revere Landing Park at 10:00 am,
but people can also join it at the southern end of the East Boston
Greenway at 10:45 am.
We'll ride through Charlestown, Everett, Chelsea, East Boston,
and Winthrop to the tip of Deer Island, right in the middle of
Boston Harbor, with great views in every direction. On the way
home, we'll stop for lunch and a possible swim at Constitution
Beach. From Roslindale Square, this is a 40-mile ride; from
Charlestown, it's more like 25 miles. The route is not always
scenic, but it is interesting. Helmets are required, and you
should be ready for less than ideal pavement.

Meet at 6:00 pm at the Martini Shell on the Truman Parkway in Hyde Park
to explore the brand-new paved mixed use path along the Neponset River from
Mattapan Square almost to Readville.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010: Bicycle Book Club
RozzieBikes invites cyclists from all over to Doug Mink's house
(90 Wellsmere Rd.) in Roslindale. We'll be discussing Peter
Zheutlin's Around the World on Two Wheels - Annie Londonderry's
Extraordinary Ride, which is available at the Boston Public Library
(and therefore also likely via other local library systems), as well as
in paperback from local bookstores and (of course) Amazon
(as new paperback from $11 plus change other used copies available,
Kindle edition ($9), and MP3 audiobook ($16)).
Please also bring other bicycle-related books to share with the group, especially travel and round-the-world books.
Doug's house is a block off Washington St. a half-mile south of
(and uphill from) Roslindale Square and a mile and a half south
of the Forest Hills Orange Line station. There is some car parking,
though less if it is really snowy, and lots of bike parking either
on the back porch or in the basement. There will be some Taza
chocolate from our November ride!

Saturday, December 5, 2009: Ride to Taza Chocolate Open House
RozzieBikes will be riding to the
Taza Chocolate Open House in
Somerville. The open house starts at 10 am, so we'll leave Adams Park in
Roslindale Square at 9:15 am and ride up the Emerald Necklace,
stopping at the Jamaica Pond Boathouse for a few minutes between
9:30 and 9:40 before heading on to Somerville. We'll use a lot
of bike paths and bike lanes in Boston, Brookline, and Cambridge
and try to head home before noon. The weather is supposed to be
nice, but we'll cancel if it is raining hard and maybe if it is
snowing hard... Helmets are required, as usual. The round trip
is a bit over 16 miles. Dress warmly, but not quite as heavily
as you think you should; on a ride this long, you'll generate
quite a bit of heat. Wear warm gloves, though.
Sunday, November 8, 2009: Mother Brook Bike Ride

RozzieBikes joins the Boston Natural Areas Network and the Friends
of Stony Brook Reservation on a tour of the entire length of the
Mother Brook, which connects the Charles River and the Neponset
River. See old mills and learn some early colonial history.

Her the eight candidates talk about how they will promote and
support greenspace if they are elected. There will be questions
about funding, park management, bicycling, public safety in parks,
green jobs for youth, arts and nature programs, links to health
and wellness, community gardens, and more. RozzieBikes is a
co-sponsor.

going to bike up the Emerald Necklace to the Charles River,
where we'll take the bike path in both directions. Doug Mink
will lead a group toward Harvard Square and George Ulrich
will lead a group toward downtown Boston. We're picking up
more riders at the Jamaica Pond Boathouse at 7:20. Beginning
on Friday, May 15, we'll have a police escort as Boston's
bicycle program begins its "Bike Fridays".

Celebrate Walk/Ride Day, the last Friday of every month,
with a ride from Roslindale Square to a celebration
in Harvard Square We'll be leaving Adams Park in
Roslindale Square between 7:00 and 7:15, and will stop at
Jamaica Pond to pick up people from JPBikes around 7:30,
riding through the Arboretum if the roads are relatively
clear or up Washington, South, and Centre if they're not.
We'll try to get to Harvard Square by 8:15.
The nominal route is on Bikely.
A free hot breakfast, provided by the Harvard Square Business Association, will be served from 7:00 to 9:00 inside and outside at Holyoke Center and Forbes Plaza, 1350 Massachusetts Ave. There will be extra raffles and goodies for those that GO GREEN and WEAR GREEN!
This event is part of the Harvard Square Winter Green Carnival 2009 from January 15th to February 1st and is co-sponsored by the Green Streets Initiative and the Office of Mayor E. Denise Simmons.
