Bike the Charles 2007
The Upper Charles Greenway is now nearly complete, connecting
Commonwealth Ave. in Auburndale to the Museum of Science (and soon out
to the Harbor) via a shared-use trail along the banks of the Charles.
We'll ride from Allston to Newton and back.
Details
- Where: start at Artesani Playground, Herter Park, Allston (just west of the intersection of Everett St. and Soldier's Field Road).
- When: Leave at 10am; plan on arriving by 9:30am to organize.
- Distance: about 17 miles.
- Pace: Very relaxed, probably 5-8 MPH.
- Terrain: flat. Very flat.
- Route: Primarily (90%) off-road paved path; some brief connections on quiet streets (5%) and some unpaved pathways (5%).

Getting There
Bicycle
The Charles paths pass straight through Herter Park. Or:
- Take Western Ave. to Everett St.
- Turn north on Everett St.
- Turn left onto Soldier's Field Road (there are lights and crosswalks)
- Make an immediate right into the parking lot.
T
You can take your bike on T rapid transit lines and some bus lines for no extra charge. Details are on the MBTA website.
- From Harvard Square (Red Line) (black path on map):
- Follow Brattle St. to Eliot St. to JFK St.
- Cross the Charles on North Harvard St. From here you can turn right onto the bike path
- Or continue on North Harvard St.
- Turn right on Western Ave.
- Turn right on Everett St.
- Turn left onto Soldier's Field Road (there are lights and crosswalks)
- Make an immediate right into the parking lot.
- From Central Square (Red Line), you can follow the bicycle directions above. Or:
- Board the 70 or 70A (cyan path on map) outbound (variously
signed as Watertown/Waltham/Cedarwood/Lakeview) at the corner of
Magazine St. and Green St.
- Get off at the Western Ave. and Everett St. stop. (The stop before it is Western Ave. opposite Riverdale St.
- Take Everett St. north (right)
- Turn left onto Soldier's Field Road (there are lights and crosswalks)
- Make an immediate right into the parking lot.
- From Main St. or Arsenal St. in Watertown or Main St. in Waltham:
- Board the 70 or 70A (cyan path on map) inbound (variously signed as Central Square or University Park).
- Get off at the Western Ave. and Everett St. stop. (The stop before it is 382 Western Ave.)
- Take Everett St. north (left)
- Turn left onto Soldier's Field Road (there are lights and crosswalks)
- Make an immediate right into the parking lot.
Car
Herter Park is on Soldier's Field Rd. between Arsenal St. and the
Eliot bridge. Use the parking lot just west of the Publick Theater.

Bailout points
Although the ride will proceed at an easy pace, there are two places
where one can easily bail back to the starting point via the T. We'll pass each point twice—once outbound, once inbound.
- Just west of Watertown Square, you can board the 70/70A inbound on Main St. and follow the directions above back to Herter Park.
- East of Moody St. in Waltham, you can board the 70/70A inbound at the commuter rail station and follow the directions above back to Herter Park.
