From Tenean Beach in the Port Norfolk section of Dorchester, we followed the Neponset Trail
up the Neponset River to Readville in Hyde Park, stopping to rest at Ryan Playground in
Mattapan and Walcott Square in Hyde Park.
On the way back, we followed Hyde Park Ave to B St and took a little-known bicycle/pedestrian
bridge across the Neponset River to the confluence of Mother Brook and the Neponset.
After crossing Dana Ave, we took Walnut St, Nott St, and Fairmount Ave back to the
Neponset Trail at the Truman Parkway. We took the Trail downhill to the next crossing,
across Blue Hill Parkway at the next light to Curtis Rd to Eliot St, which took us to
Central Ave and up a hill to an overlook of the Lower Mills mill pond, the powerplant
smokestack, the Red Line trolley, and the trail, where we watched those cyclists who
didn't want to bike up the hill ride below us.
Those of us who rode up the hill, took Adams St. to Medway St and biked through the
Ventura neighborhood to Butler St. Station, where we rejoined the Neponset Trail back
to Tenean beach with a detour to visit the Neponset murals under the Southeast Expressway
and cross Davenport Creek at the site of our annual Pumpkin Float/Parade.
After dropping off most of our riders at our starting point, three of us followed the
route of the future Dorchester Coast section of the Neponset Trail to Victory Road
and two of us rode back to Mattapan with a stop at Phillips Candy Store for a bit of chocolate.
