Massachusetts Bicycle Glossary

BCOM (Bicycle Coalition of Massachusetts)
Old abbreviation for Massachusetts' bike advocacy group, which is now referred to as MssBike. It has about 1,000 members, headquartered in Cambridge with chapters around the state.

CRW (Charles River Wheelmen)
The largest bicycle group in Massachusetts, a riding club with over 1,000 members based in greater Boston.

DEM (Department of Environmental Management)
A state agency, part of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, which manages the state parks and forests outside of the immediate Boston area. They own the Cape Cod Rail Trail and the Norwottuck Trail.

DEM (Department of Environmental Management)
A state agency, part of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, the Division of Forests and Parks of which manages State Parks and long-distance bikepaths such as the Cape Cod Rail Trail and the Norwottuck Trail.

MDC (Metropolitan District Commission)
A state agency, part of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs, which manages and plans the Boston regional Parkway and Park system. They own the Charles River and Mystic River Bikepaths, and the Middlesex Fells Blue Hills, and Stony Brook Reservations, among many others.

MHD
Massachusetts Highway Department, formerly the Department of Public Works, which is responsible for all state highways, most bridge construction, most bikepath construction, and roadway standards in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
