BNAN Bike Ride To Mattapan and Hyde Park Urban Wilds

In this ride, we will visit as many urban wilds in the Mattapan and Hyde Park neighborhoods of Boston as we can, starting with the Gladeside Urban Wild in Mattapan

This ride is cosponsored by the the Boston Natural Areas Network and its Urban Wilds Council, which is working to build awareness of non-park open spaces in the city of Boston.

Details

  • Where: Meet at the Mildred Ave. Community Center in Mattapan, just off Norfolk St.
  • When: Departing at 10:00 am, Saturday, March 19, 2011
  • Distance: about 11 miles.
  • Pace: Relaxed, probably 6-10 MPH.
  • Terrain: Mostly flat with a few hills.
  • Route: Mixture of on-road (75%), gravel road (5%), and shared-use path (20%).

Getting There

Bicycle

From Forest Hills Station or end of the Southwest Corridor, ride east toward Franklin Park and follow Morton St. (the major street with a paved shoulder) at the rotary. Cross Blue Hill Ave. and turn right on Norfolk St., then left on Mildred St. to the start.
From Dorchester, take Gallivan Blvd. or Morton St. west past their merger and turn left on Norfolk St. after crossing the railroad tracks.

MBTA

You can take your bike to Forest Hills or Ashmont and follow the directions above. The Fairmount branch, which stops at Morton St., very near the start, does not run on Saturdays. Details are on the MBTA website.

Bailout points

You can turn around at Mattapan Square or Dorchester Lower Mills. The closest T station to most of the ride is Ashmont on the Red Line, but it is a hike.
