National Train Day Ride

Meet at 9:00 am at South Station.
Make sure that you leave enough time to buy your ticket
and get onto the train to Walpole by 9:15!
To celebrate National Train Day, we will explore parts of the old New England and Old Colony Railroads. The route is about 25 miles and most of it is pretty flat and level. We will average about 5 miles per hour, so the ride should be an easy one for most cyclists. We’ll stop to look a stations in Walpole, Sharon, Easton, Stoughton, and Canton Junction. We’ll make a stop for lunch and will finish late afternoon, probably around 5:00. After the ride, we will take the train back to South Station. Ride leader: Dick Bauer, 857-540-6293 |

MassBike Spins: Circle the City Preview Ride

and future bike paths connect Boston's parks in a preview of this summer's
Circle the City project. We'll ride from the center of the city to Boston Harbor
and back on some of our most scenic routes.

CycloFemme - Boston Ride!

We will have 2 starting/meeting spots: Harvard Square @ 11:30, 12 Noon start time For the Cambridge start to the 16.5 mile loop, we will meet at 11:30 at the Harvard University Boathouse (aka Weld Boathouse) on the corner of Memorial Drive and JFK Street. The ride will leave promptly at noon, but we will be there early to answer questions, talk a bit about the ride, and pass out goodies from Bay State Bike Week and CycloFemme. Get there early to snag some gear! Back Bay Fens @ 12:30, 12:45 start time For the Boston start, and shorter 8 mile loop, please plan to meet outside the Emerald Necklace Conservancy Visitors’ Center in the Back Bay Fens at 12:30. Assuming we make good time from Harvard, we should roll up between 12:30 and 12:40, and we will plan to rest quickly here, meet the new riders, and head out around 12:45. Please note: The Visitors’ Center is also the meeting spot for a 1pm walking tour about 19th Century Women, so it may be a little crowded. Just look for the other ladies on bikes. Picnic @ 1:30 It’s Lilac Day in the Arboretum, where we plan to stop for a long rest and picnic lunch. If the Arboretum is too crowded, we will just ride through the park, stop to refill water bottles and use the restrooms, and continue on to Jamaica Pond, where we can picnic on the lawn by the pond. Ride finish: 2:45ish in Boston, 3:15ish in Cambridge. The Boston portion of the ride should be done around 2:45 ending near the Fenway T stop on Park Ave. The longer ride should take about 3 hours total, so we plan to be back in Cambridge around 3:15-3:30 pm, if you’d like to have your friends or family meet you after the ride (may we suggest the Charlie’s Beer Garden as a good post-ride refuel spot). |

MAPC Unveils the Greater Boston

Come to the launch of the most comprehensive source of bicycle and walking facilities every produced in the Boston region. The free Greater Boston Cycling and Walking Map will be available in both print and interactive online versions. With this map our goal is to show all dedicated bicycle facilities, walking/hiking trails, and regional networks in one source. The online version will allow user selection of layers to show bicycle, walking, regional trails as well as customized printing capabilities. At the event we will hand out copies of the new map, demonstrate the capabilities of the online interactive map, share how to access the information, and share plans for future integration of mobile phone apps, and user contributions. Ride of Silence

The ride will depart Seven Hills Park behind the Davis Square MBTA Station
in Somerville at 7pm (plan to arrive no later than 6:45pm so we can depart promptly),
then make its way through Cambridge to Boston where it will conclude at the Charles
Street entrance to the Boston Common. The six-mile ride will take place in total
silence, at a slow pace, with only signs worn by the riders to explain the purpose
of the ride. The route intentionally takes busy streets in order to draw the greatest
amount of attention, though the riders take care to follow the law and minimize
interference with motor vehicle traffic.
MassBike will lead the Boston-area Ride of Silence, one of hundreds of such rides taking place worldwide to honor bicyclists killed or injured while riding on public roads, and to raise awareness of the need for motorists to exercise more caution around bicyclists. The ride occurs during Bay State Bike Week, the statewide celebration of bicycling. Let us know if you plan to attend by RSVPing to MassBike. The idea of the Ride of Silence is to draw attention to the human toll caused by roads that are poorly designed for bicycling and by motorists who fail to drive safely around bicyclists. While biking remains a generally safe mode of travel, it is still important to note that we bicyclists do have significant vulnerabilities that may not be recognized or fully appreciated by the general public, and motorists in particular. This ride highlights the fact that as gas prices rise and more people take to the streets on two wheels, we all need to slow down a little and exercise good judgment. The ride will conclude with brief remarks at Boston Common. If you would like the name of a friend or relative who has been killed or injured in a bike crash to be read aloud, please notify us at Rides@MassBike.org. through Cambridge’s historic streets of scientific discovery. Starting in Kendall Square,
we’ll explore the technological world of MIT and the once-industrial region of Cambridgeport.
We’ll visit the Museum of Science for a personalized presentation, view the Boston
Skyline from our newest park on North Point and then head across Cambridge and through
Harvard, stopping for light refreshments on Cambridge Common. Our ride continues down
Brattle Street where (the successful) scientists and inventors of every generation have
lived. We'll end with lunch at Fresh Pond, in time for you to enjoy Fresh Pond Day, with
its own celebration of community and nature.

What is a Bikenic? It’s a picnic where people share information and discuss biking to work. Bring a lunch, yourself, and your curiosity to the Boston Common Frog Pond. No bike riding involved or bike required (you can take the subway or drive for all we care!) This is not a workshop. This will be a group of people in the community curious about biking, or with tips to share. There is no agenda, set topic, or structure. The idea is that no single person can know everything about what you want to know about bike commuting, but perhaps a group of people do. It will be kind a community knowledge-sharing social event.
